He's making the mistake of equating idling to warming the car up, they are not the same thing. I'm not the first person to state idling for extended periods of time is bad, but in my own experience I've noticed that the head does not get the needed oil pressure, and I've seen some cars knock at idle due to, again, the lower oil pressure and worn bearings. While driving normally, the knock goes away.
